The Yellow Sign
1 05 2008If you look around Rockmart on any given weekend you will see yellow signs posted throughout the community. If God ever leads you to take on that ministry let me know. The yellow sign is not the focus of this blog but more about the sign itself. If you look at the slogan at the bottom of the sign it says “We’ll change the way you think about church”. Now some Christians may look at that and say “I love the way I think about church” and may even get a little mift because of that slogan; however, if you regularly attend church, then then sign is not for you. Before we launched Cross View I personally went through our community and ask people why they didn’t go to church. The sad thing is it wasn’t hard to find someone to talk to about it. But here were the top 4 things people said about church. Here is #1
1. Don’t have church clothes! When we first started we made a decision that many churches focus more on the clothes someone has on their back that the need one has in their heart. So we came to the conclusion that if we were going to be like Jesus and minister to the man at the tomb then we had to keep our eyes on more important things. Now I agree with modesty, but the church for far too long has given the appearance of a social club instead of Gods bride.
Yes! We really do wear what we want to church and I don’t even need a ‘dress down’ coupon like I do at my job!! : ) Everyone is casual, comfortable, and genuine before God. There is such a freedom in worship, and the atmosphere there is unexplainable. Come check us out!! My 20 yr old son can wear flip flops and raggedy shorts and still minister to children in the children’s church! He even has a long ponytail, and no one judges him for it! Wow, imagine that. We love it there, and are so proud to be a part of a fresh, new approach to serving our Lord, Jesus and His children, no matter what condition they come to us in.
When we say “come as you are” we really mean it. How you dress is really not an issue. You can dress up or down and no one cares. We are there to praise and worship a Living God and to reach our community in His name. The atmosphere is more than casual and friendly, it is blanketed in the Holy Spirit. A person can”t not worship in this setting. It is awsome to be there on Sunday and I can’t wait till we are able to have more than the two services each week.
“Come as you are”, never rings so truer when you arrive for church and folks are still in their pajamas. Sheila and I got a little chuckle out of this a few Sunday’s ago. At least they were on time, and came for the message.
PS: Have you thought of putting a directional arrow on the yellow sings just off of the main road.
